Crystal River Manatee Season

Winter changes Crystal River’s manatee habitat and the rules that protect it. Understand the refuge’s designated season, what may change at the springs, and why a guided outing can still vary from one day to the next.

Plan your visit

What the dates tell you

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service designates November 15 through March 31 as the Crystal River refuge’s manatee season. Seven warm-water sanctuaries operate during that period. Manatees are wild animals, so sightings and behavior cannot be guaranteed.

Manatees use warm springs especially when water elsewhere gets cold, but their presence and the day’s visibility vary. Even outside the designated season, individual encounters are possible. Choose a tour for the activity you want.

Winter brings refuge protections

During the November 15–March 31 season, sanctuary areas protect warm-water habitat. Posted boundaries and guide instructions determine where visitors can travel or enter the water.

An extreme cold event can also lead the refuge to temporarily close spring areas or expand protected space. These decisions are made for manatees, and a booked outing must adapt to them.

Outside winter, the bay is still a wildlife visit

The end of the designated season does not mean manatees leave the area. Recent tour travellers have reported spring and summer sightings, while other outings may find none. A single review cannot predict your date.

If you prefer a guided swim, choose it for the in-water experience and the crew’s support. If you would enjoy the bay even without entering the water, consider a dry boat cruise or a guided paddle.

Three Sisters access follows its own rules

The refuge currently permits paddle craft inside Three Sisters Springs from April 1 through November 14. During the winter season, protected areas and any temporary closures can change access. The City’s boardwalk is a separate land visit with no water entry from that property.

Do not infer spring entrance from a tour name. Read the exact route and check current refuge and City notices close to travel.

Choose the experience you would enjoy either way

A swim puts you in the water with a guide. A boat cruise keeps you dry. A kayak gives you an active, low-to-the-water view. Their suitability, inclusions and meeting arrangements differ.

Compare each tour’s suitability, inclusions and meeting arrangements before choosing the format that works for your group.
